Morales says US aid to Bolivia in 2020 proves its role in the coup

UNITED STATES (OBSERVATORY NEWS) — Former Bolivian President Evo Morales has stated that the recently announced US assistance to the interim Bolivian government led by Jeanine Anez proves Washington’s involvement in his overthrow.

“This is further evidence of the US government’s involvement in the coup. They want us to be their backyard again. They want to absorb lithium and other natural resources. They will not be able to do that. We will come back and win ”, Morales declared.

Morales’ comments came after a White House memorandum on Monday announced “vital” aid to Bolivia in 2020.

“I hereby determine that providing US assistance to Bolivia in fiscal year 2020 is vital to US national interests,” US President Donald Trump said in the document.

Trump also authorized Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to submit the designation to Congress and publish it in the Federal Register.

Riots in Bolivia began in October when Morales won his fourth term in office and faced immediate resistance from opposition parties that challenged the election results. Protesters took to the streets claiming the vote had been rigged.

After weeks of unrest, Morales resigned under military pressure and was transferred to Mexico where he was offered political asylum. He was granted asylum in Argentina.

Meanwhile, conservative senator Anez declared himself acting president and received the backing of the US president’s government.

New presidential elections are scheduled for May 3, however Morales will not be able to run as he has already reached the constitutional limit of two terms in office.
