More than 30 people were killed in a traffic accident in North Korea

NORTH KOREA (OBSERVATORY) – A “serious traffic accident” has killed a large number of victims, including Chinese tourists in North Korea, the Chinese Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Monday.

The ministry gave no further details, but state television said in a tweet that more than 30 people were killed when a tourist bus fell from a bridge in North Korea. This tweet was later deleted.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry statement said China reported Sunday evening that the Chinese embassy in Pyongyang had sent staff to the scene.

Most of the tourists visiting North Korea come from China, which shares long land borders and regular flights to Pyongyang.

The number of Chinese tourists visiting North Korea is estimated at tens of thousands a year, many of them by train through the border city of Dandong.
