UNITED STATES (OBSERVATORY NEWS) — NATO wants to improve relations with its largest neighbor, Russia, said Secretary General of the Alliance Jens Stoltenberg at the opening of the Munich Security Conference.
According to him, the bloc’s members are competing with Russia, which has become more self-confident and wants to return to the concept of spheres of influence in world politics.
In response, NATO is reinforcing Russia’s containment and supporting sanctions against it, Stoltenberg said. At the same time, he made a reservation, all NATO states are “committed to dialogue with Russia”.
NATO Secretary General warned against attempts to distance Europe from the United States: according to him, this would not only weaken the transatlantic union, but would also jeopardize the unity of Europe, reports RIA News . According to Stoltenberg, he does not believe in Europe and the United States separately, but “only in Europe and the United States together.”
He also said: NATO is not leaving Afghanistan, but the Alliance is ready to change the size of its military in this country if representatives of the radical Taliban movement demonstrate “a willingness to stop the violence and make compromises.”
Earlier it was reported that the Taliban handed over to the US ambassador in Afghanistan Zalmay Khalilzad a document proposing to establish a temporary ceasefire in Afghanistan for a period of 7-10 days.
However, it is possible that the radical commanders and militants of the Taliban will not want to join the truce.
Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda spoke earlier at the Munich Security Conference. In his speech, he also spoke about the need to contain Russia , justifying the need to place an American military contingent in Lithuania as a “security threat” from our country.
