NATO’s supremacy “eroded” against Russia (US chief of staff)

UNITED STATES, WASHINGTON (OBSERVATORY) — The supremacy of NATO over Russia has diminished in recent years, said Joseph Dunford, US Chief of Staff, at the meeting of the military committee of the Treaty Organization of the United States. North Atlantic in Ljubljana, Slovenia.

“Russia is a serious competitor now that the advantage of NATO has eroded in the face of the resurgence of Russia,” said General US during the discussion on the future of the Alliance and capabilities necessary to cope with “an increasingly competitive environment”.

“We bring coherence to NATO’s internal planning and we are undertaking collective efforts to develop our defense capability,” said Dunford.

At the end of May 2019, the NATO Military Committee adopted a new strategy whose provisions were not disclosed to the public. According to official communiqués, it aims to “adapt the Atlantic Alliance to increasingly complex security challenges” and to define effective deterrence and defense options.

Before the adoption of these provisions, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg announced that a renewed military strategy was needed for the Alliance to deal with the Russian “nuclear threat” and the challenges emerging in East and South.
