Netherlands joins a European mission to monitor the Gulf waters

UNITED STATES (OBSERVATORY NEWS) — By Playfuls Team The Dutch government on Friday sent a frigate to participate in a “European mission launched by France” aimed at monitoring the waters of the Gulf, where tensions with Iran have increased recently.

The government statement also said the Netherlands, along with five other countries in early 2019, would join a mechanism that would allow EU companies to deal with Iran despite US sanctions.

The frigate carrying a raft will arrive in the Gulf at the end of January and will continue until the end of June 2020.

The statement said the goal was “to enhance maritime security.”

“It is very important to ensure free and safe passage” in the strategic Strait of Hormuz, where global oil supplies pass, Dutch Prime Minister Mark Roth said.

“The Netherlands is happy that they will participate,” he said at his weekly press conference. “Our participation is not a formality, we are participating because we want to.”

For this purpose, the Netherlands will send a number of officers to be present at the European Command, which will be located within the French naval base in Abu Dhabi.

The Dutch government said Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden would join the Instax mechanism for trade with Iran.

The mechanism was launched by France in cooperation with the United Kingdom and Germany with the aim of circumventing US sanctions against Tehran by avoiding the use of the dollar in exchanges.
