New therapy could cure many forms of cancer at once

UNITED STATES, WASHINGTON (OBSERVATORY) — The experiment aims to stimulate the production of the iNKT cell, a powerful immune cell capable of fighting several types of cancer. The first results observed in mice are promising.

The results of an experiment were published on September 5th by a team of researchers from the University of California at Los Angeles.

They reported an experimental therapy to multiply the amount of a powerful immune cell, dubbed iNKT (invariant natural killer T). This type of cell is already present in the human body, but in very small quantities. Once in sufficient numbers, it is able to fight against several forms of cancer.

The experiment was conducted on mice. The researchers first took stem cells from their bone marrow to recreate this cell. They then transferred these iNKT cells to the mice, as well as several myelomas (a form of blood cancer) and melanoma (a skin cancer).

The team observed that rodents began to produce iNKT cells on their own. The cells effectively suppressed myelomas and interrupted the development of melanoma.

“What’s really promising is that it only needs to be injected once to stimulate the production of iNKT cells, which in sufficient numbers to fight cancer , do so for the entire life of the animal, “says Lili Yang, one of the authors of the publication, whose comments are reported on the site Medical News Today.

Although this treatment is still in the preclinical stage and we do not know the effect it will have on humans, researchers believe that this principle is promising. Medicine is already able to insert stem cells into the human bone marrow.
