North Korean leader oversaw test of “multi-barreled giant rocket launcher”

UNITED STATES, WASHINGTON (OBSERVATORY) — North Korean leader Kim Jong-un oversaw the test of a “multi-barreled giant rocket launcher” on Saturday, the Korean Central News Agency said on Sunday.

The South Korean military said North Korea appeared to have fired two short-range ballistic missiles that landed in the sea off its east coast in the latest in a series of missile launches in recent weeks.

Photos released by North Korea’s official media showed rockets being fired from huge tubes placed on the back of an eight-wheeled vehicle.

Analysts said it appeared to be at least the fourth new missile system unveiled by North Korea since nuclear disarmament talks stalled at a February summit between Kim and US President Donald Trump.

North Korea should further develop new strategic and tactical weapons “to counter ever-growing military threats and pressure from hostile forces,” the official Korean Central News Agency quoted Kim as saying on Saturday.

North Korea’s young scientists who have developed the missiles “are the country’s treasure and precious asset,” Kim said. “North Korea will never trade the country’s strategic security by easing sanctions,” he said.
