Official: US expects Turkey to take over ISIS prisoners if Kurds withdraw

UNITED STATES (OBSERVATORY) — Washington expects Turkey to take over responsibility for Islamic State prisoners if Ankara, during its planned incursion into northeastern Syria, controls militant detention areas, a senior State Department official said on Monday.

So far, the Kurdish faction, allied with the United States, still controls the detention facilities, the official said.

“If they (the Turks) enter an area with prisoners and the SDF withdraws from the security posts around these prisons, we expect the Turks to take responsibility for them,” he said in a statement.
