Official: US initial withdrawal in Syria confined to safe area near Turkey

UNITED STATES (OBSERVATORY) — The withdrawal of US troops in Syria will initially be limited to a piece of land near the Turkish border where Ankara and Washington have agreed to work together to establish a special security zone there, a US official told Reuters on Monday.

The official, who spoke to Reuters on condition of anonymity, said the pullout from the area would not include many troops, perhaps only dozens. He did not say whether the troops would leave Syria or move elsewhere in the country of about 1,000 US troops.
