Officials say 16 killed in coal mine explosion in southwestern Pakistan

PAKISTAN (OBSERVATORY) – A coal mine explosion killed at least 16 people and wounded hundreds of people in southwestern Pakistan while dozens of people were still trapped inside, officials said.

The methane gas caused the explosion at a mine about 60 km east of Quetta, capital of Baluchistan province, said Atallah Khan, director of disaster management.

“We recovered 11 bodies,” he said.

He said more than 12 workers were still trapped inside the mine. Iftikhar Ahmed, chief inspector of mines, said a rescue operation was under way.

Incidents are frequent in the Baluchistan mines and are mainly due to inadequate safety procedures.
