Paraguay reports first case of coronavirus

US, WASHINGTON (NEWS OBSERVATORY) — The Minister of Health of Paraguay, Julio Mazzoleni, reported the first case of COVID-19 coronavirus in the country.

“The central laboratory confirmed the first case of COVID19 in Paraguay. More information will be available shortly at a press conference. I urge citizens to remain calm, protocols that have already been reviewed and approved by WHO are being applied,” wrote Mazzoleni on Twitter.

The first infected Paraguayan, according to local media, came from Europe. In South America, cases of COVID-19 coronavirus have been reported in Colombia, Ecuador, Argentina, Chile, Peru and Brazil.

Earlier in Paraguay, seven suspected cases of illness were recorded, but the tests showed a negative result for coronavirus, under the supervision of another 70 people who recently entered the country.

On December 31, 2019, the Chinese authorities informed the World Health Organization (WHO) about an outbreak of unknown pneumonia in the city of Wuhan in the central part of the country (Hubei Province).

Experts have identified the causative agent of the disease – this is a new coronavirus. WHO recognized the outbreak as an emergency of international importance and gave the disease its official name – COVID-19.

The number of infected in mainland China exceeded 80.6 thousand people, 3070 died, more than 55.4 thousand were cured. According to the latest WHO data, 335 people have died outside the PRC.
