Parliamentary committees in several countries condemn the “Turkish aggression” in Syria

UNITED STATES (OBSERVATORY NEWS) — The heads of foreign affairs committees in several parliaments, including the French National Assembly and the US House of Representatives, on Friday condemned “in the strongest terms” what they saw as Turkish military aggression in northeastern Syria.

“We, the heads of foreign affairs committees in the parliaments of Germany, the United States, France, the United Kingdom and the European Parliament, jointly condemn in the strongest terms the Turkish military attack on northeastern Syria,” the signatories wrote in a joint declaration.

The signatories are María de Sarnez of the National Assembly of France, Elliott Engel of the US House of Representatives, David McAllister of the European Parliament, Norbert Rutgen of the Bundestag (Germany) and Tom Tugendhat of the House of Commons, the statement said.

“This intervention is a military aggression and a violation of international law,” they said.

“We consider the abandonment of the Syrian Kurds a mistake. Our SDF, our partner in the international coalition, has contributed significantly and successfully to the unfinished war against ISIS in Syria and has suffered significant losses.”

They expressed their “deep regret at the decision of the President of the United States (Donald Trump) to withdraw US troops from northeastern Syria,” and called on “the European Union and its member states to take responsibility and participate in resolving the conflict.”
