UNITED STATES, WASHINGTON (OBSERVATORY) — At the request of President Donald Trump , the Pentagon on Tuesday appropriated 3.6 billion dollars to finance the construction of a 280-kilometer-long wall on the border with Mexico.
Pentagon spokesman Jonathan Hoffman told reporters that in order to provide the money, the Pentagon decided to “postpone” 127 projects to build and modernize military buildings inside and outside the United States that had been earmarked in the 2019 budget.
He continued, during a press conference, that Defense Minister Mark Esper “decided that these construction projects are necessary to support the work of the armed forces and therefore the Ministry of Defense will implement 11 projects to build a military barrier.”

“The total length (…) is 175 miles,” said Kenneth Rabuano, who is in charge of Homeland Security at the Pentagon, noting that it involves reinforcing sections of an existing border wall and building new ones.
According to General Andrew Poppas, director of operations at the US General Staff, the implementation of this project will reduce the number of military personnel deployed on the border with Mexico on the order of Trump to stop illegal immigration from Latin America.
The Pentagon did not announce to reporters the military construction projects that were to be postponed, noting that it wanted to first inform elected members of Congress about the mandates involved.
