Philippines searches for 17 missing after maritime accidents

PHILIPPINES (OBSERVATORY) –┬áSearches are under way for 17 crew members on Monday in the third offshore incident since the beginning of the week, a spokesman for the Philippine coast guard said.

Marine accidents are common in the Philippines, which consists of more than 7,000 islands with weak laws, ship aging and wave power.

“Seventeen crew members are missing and we are continuing to search for them,” said Captain Armand Palillo, adding that the boat ran near Fortune Island, a tourist destination in Batangas province.

On Sunday, authorities rescued 14 people aboard a boat, mostly tourists on the tourist island of Palawan, and 19 people aboard a boat in the southeastern province of Camarines Norte after the two ships overturned due to the waves.
