UNITED STATES (OBSERVATORY) – CIA Director, candidate for the post of Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said that he intends to discuss alternatives to the Nord Stream-2 gas pipeline.
Senator John Barrasso at the hearings on the approval of the candidacy of Pompeo demanded from him to promise to seek the abolition of the gas pipeline project, behind which Russia stands.
“I think it will be a huge opportunity for the US and others if we can achieve the conditions under which Russia will have less opportunities to turn off the gas pipelines, create risks or threaten our partners and friends around the world.” I am ready to discuss specifically “Nord Stream-2” to make sure that there are affordable alternatives in the best interests of the West, and not (Russian President) Vladimir Putin, “Pompeo replied.
The Nord Stream-2 project involves the construction of two strings of a gas pipeline with a total capacity of 55 billion cubic meters of gas per year from the Russian coast through the Baltic Sea to Germany. The new pipeline is planned to be built next to the current “Nord Stream”. The operator of the project is Nord Stream 2 AG, and its sole shareholder is Gazprom. The total cost of the project is estimated at 9.5 billion euros.
The permission to build the “Nord Stream-2” has already been given by Germany. In early April, Finland agreed to implement the project.
