Pompeo: We are reshaping a real deterrent policy against Iran

UNITED STATES (OBSERVATORY NEWS)

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced Monday evening that Washington is reshaping a “real deterrent policy against Iran” until it “behaves like a normal country.”

The tension between the two countries reached a new peak, a few days ago, following the assassination of the United States commander of the Iranian “Quds Force”, Qassem Soleimani, in Baghdad, and Iran’s response to launch missiles at two bases in its neighbor, Iraq, hosting American soldiers.

“President (Donald Trump) and members of his national security team are re-establishing a real deterrent policy against Iran,” Pompeo said, in a speech to students at Stanford University in California.

“Strategically, this deterrence policy means convincing the other side that the costs of a particular behavior outweigh its benefits,” he added.

And he considered that “for decades, the American administration has not worked with its two political parties (the main: the Republican and the Democratic) enough to deter Iran in order to maintain our security.”

He believed that the nuclear agreement signed between Western powers and Iran in 2015 “made matters worse”, which enabled the (Iranian) regime to collect wealth and establish networks of Shiite militias, which killed an American (in Iraq recently) and posed a major threat to our embassy in Baghdad.

And Washington withdrew from this agreement, in 2018, what Tehran responded to, a year later, with a gradual reduction of its obligations under the agreement.

He said that what the Trump administration did was it imposed diplomatic isolation, economic pressure, and a military deterrent against Iran.

He added that the goal is to “deprive the (Iranian) regime of the resources it needs to carry out its malicious activities around the world, and our desire that Iran behave as a natural country, for example, as in Norway”

Regarding the situation in the Gulf region, Pompeo said: Diplomatically, allies and partners joined us today to patrol the Strait of Hormuz, to stop Iranian attacks on navigation in the region.

On the Iranian response to the assassination of Soleimani, Pompeo said: No American was killed in that bombing.

However, we will not reduce the risk of any attack on the United States or its forces.

And he added, warning: The Iranian regime must now realize what we will do if they put the lives of Americans back in danger .. If Iran ascends, we will end the matter in our own way.

Pompeo stressed that the sanctions would continue on Iran until it stops “terrorist activities”, and is committed to never possessing nuclear weapons.

Tehran says its nuclear program is designed for peaceful purposes, especially the production of electricity.
