RUSSIA (OBSERVATORY) – The strikes on Saturday by Washington and its allies torpedoes political efforts to resolve the Syrian crisis and may have serious consequences at the international level, said the Russian president in a telephone interview with his Iranian counterpart.
The Western strikes were conducted in violation of international law and will have destructive effects on the international relations system, Putin and Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, commonly said in a telephone conversation the day after the attack.
“It has been found that this illegal action is seriously prejudicial to the prospects of a political settlement in Syria,” the Russian presidency said in a statement.
“If similar actions in violation of the UN Charter are repeated, this will inevitably lead to chaos in international relations,” Vladimir Putin told his Iranian counterpart.
Russia, Iran and Turkey have vouched for the Syrian settlement. This interview with Mr Rouhani comes after the telephone conversation between Vladimir Putin and Recep Tayyip Erdogan, also to discuss the strikes.
The United States, the United Kingdom and France attacked Syria’s military infrastructure sites in the night of 13-14 April. This tripartite coalition fired 103 missiles, 71 of which were shot in the near future. Last year, the Syrian military airfield in Shayrat had already been attacked by 59 missiles.
To justify their actions, Washington and its allies claimed that these strikes were a response to the alleged chemical attack in the city of Douma.
The Syrian authorities have always denied this attack, while the Russian Defense Ministry said it was staged.
