Putin urged not to make a confrontation field from Syria

UNITED STATES, WASHINGTON (OBSERVATORY) — Russian President Vladimir Putin called on Iran and Saudi Arabia not to use Syrian territory as a field for confrontation.

“I know that the leadership of Saudi Arabia, where I am going to visit soon, and the leadership of Iran – we are in constant contact with Iranian colleagues, the other day I met with the President of Iran, they want good and peace for the Syrian people. And we urge them, guided by this noble impulse, to do everything in order not to use the territory of Syria as a platform for confrontation,” Putin said during a speech at the annual 16th meeting of the Valdai Club.

He explained that the conflict between the states cannot but affect the situation in Syria.

“You said how Russia intends to overcome these differences. But Russia cannot overcome them. This can only be done by our friends themselves, both in Saudi Arabia and in Iran. We can only contribute to this, create conditions, offer various solutions to the problem, ”Putin concluded.

The opening of the 16th annual meeting of the Valdai Club took place earlier on October 3. Putin greeted those present and thanked the heads of other states for the visit.

One of the first statements by the Russian president was an assessment of the role of Asia in the world. As Putin noted, “Asia is regaining its place in world affairs, strengthening its position in all areas” and shows that the principles of state sovereignty do not contradict openness and globalization.
