UNITED STATES (OBSERVATORY) – Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said on Wednesday the Iranian people would not bow to US pressure as Washington reinstates economic sanctions on the Islamic Republic.
“The Iranian people will never surrender in the face of the conspiracies and pressures of the American government,” Rouhani was quoted as saying by state media.
Rowhani won a new term in last year’s election mainly due to his promise to improve the economy after a historic deal with major powers that led to some lifting of sanctions against Iran in return for curbing its nuclear program.
But Trump’s decision to withdraw from the deal threatens to undermine it, and the rest of the signatory state – Russia, China, Britain, France and Germany – is struggling to keep it.
The US move has offered Rouhani criticism from militants, who have long opposed any rapprochement with Western governments or companies.
