Romania confirms first case of coronavirus

UNITED STATES (OBSERVATORY NEWS) — The State Secretary of the Ministry of Health of Romania, Horatiu Moldovan, said Wednesday night that the country had officially registered the first case of coronavirus infection.

The Romanian Foreign Ministry said on Tuesday that an Italian citizen was in the country from February 18 to 22, who was diagnosed with coronavirus upon returning home.

“A positive test result for coronavirus was obtained at the Matei Balsa Institute (Bucharest – ed.). This is a patient from Gorj county,” Moldovan said on the air of Antena 3 television channel.

The representative of the Ministry of Health said that the patient had previously been quarantined. He was one of those who had contact with an infected Italian citizen during his last visit to Romania.

On December 31, 2019, the Chinese authorities informed the World Health Organization (WHO) about an outbreak of unknown pneumonia in the city of Wuhan in the central part of the country (Hubei Province).

Experts have identified the causative agent of the disease – this is a new coronavirus. WHO recognized the outbreak as an emergency of international importance and gave the disease its official name – COVID-19. The number of infected in mainland China has already exceeded 78 thousand people, 2715 died, almost 30 thousand were cured.

Cases of infection outside the PRC are recorded, according to the latest WHO data, in 33 countries, the number of infected has reached 2,459 people, 34 people have died.
