Rouhani: Legal proceedings for those responsible for the crash of the Ukrainian plane

Iran’s president, Hassan Rouhani, said the accidental crash of a Ukrainian aircraft by the Iranian air defense system is an unpardonable mistake and those responsible should be prosecuted according to law.

In a written statement, Rouhani said that in an atmosphere of American threat following the assassination of General Qasem Soleimani, the country’s defense systems have been deployed in full readiness in the face of possible US attacks.

“In the wake of these developments, the (missile) blast caused a catastrophe that resulted in the deaths of dozens of people,” Rouhani said, adding that they felt sad because of the mistake.

“This is not an issue that can be easily overlooked. Investigations into the cause and perpetrators of the disaster should continue and legal proceedings be held against those responsible for this unpardonable mistake. Moreover, necessary measures should be taken to eliminate weaknesses in the country’s air defense system so that such disasters do not happen again, “Iranian President Rouhani said.

Iranian authorities earlier admitted that the plane had accidentally crashed from the air defense system.

Ukraine’s Airlines Boeing 737-800 crashed Wednesday shortly after take-off from Tehran’s Imam Khomeini International Airport, just hours after the Revolutionary Guard fired dozens of ballistic missiles at bases where US troops were deployed in Iraq in retaliation for the killing of Qasem Soleimani, head of the IRGC’s elite Quds force near Baghdad International Airport in a drone strike.

All 176 people aboard were killed in the crash, including Iranian, Canadian, Ukrainian, Swedish, Afghan, German and British nationals.
