Russia began construction of an air defense base in the Arctic

RUSSIA (OBSERVATORY) –┬áThe construction of a military town for military servicemen of the Northern Fleet’s air defense began in Yakutsk Tiksi port, the fleet press service told Interfax.

“Today, during the working trip to the Tiksi (Yakutia) garrison, the commander of the Northern Fleet, Admiral Nikolai Evmenov, took part in the ceremony of installing the first pile of the modern block-modular town for the servicemen of the Air Force and Air Defense unit of the Northern Fleet,” the press service said.

Last November, Evmenov said that in 2018, a new air defense division would be formed in the fleet. Its connections are deployed on the Novaya Zemlya Archipelago, as well as in the townships of Dixon and Tiksi, the commander noted.

According to the press service of the fleet, the construction of a military town is planned to be carried out within six months.

“It will consist of 11 facilities, including: dormitories for servicemen, the administrative building, diesel power station, water and fuel storage, dining room, garage, etc. All the facilities will be interconnected by covered passages, which is especially important in the Far North and Arctic regions, “the press service added.

The Northern Fleet is an inter-service strategic alliance of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation, which defends Russia’s national interests both in the Arctic and in other regions of the World Ocean. In the arsenal of the Northern Fleet, in particular, nuclear submarines, heavy aircraft-carrying cruiser Admiral Kuznetsov and heavy nuclear missile cruiser Peter the Great.
