UNITED STATES, WASHINGTON (OBSERVATORY) — Russia has deployed the S-400 Triumf air defense systems on the Novaya Zemlya archipelago in the Arctic. This was reported on September 16 by the press service of the Northern Fleet of the Russian Federation.
“The Northern Fleet’s anti-aircraft missile regiment deployed on the island of South Archipelago Novaya Zemlya has been completely re-equipped with new S-400 air defense systems, ” the press service quoted Interfax as saying.
Previously, the Northern Fleet regiment was armed with S-300 air defense. To work with new systems, the personnel of the regiment were retrained and ready to take up combat duty.
Re-equipment on the S-400 will significantly increase the area of controlled airspace in the Arctic.
On September 12, the new S-400 regiment set was prematurely handed over to the Ministry of Defense . The ceremony was held in the Astrakhan region on the territory of the Kapustin Yar training ground.
S-400 Triumph is an anti-aircraft missile system designed to destroy aerodynamic and ballistic targets. The detection range is up to 600 km, the radius of the system cover zone is 400 km. Mobile rocket launchers are able to move on the road. Deployment time from stowed position is five minutes.
