Russia will insure China from a US attack

UNITED STATES (OBSERVATORY NEWS) — Moscow shared with Beijing SPRN technologies – the ability to detect the launch of ballistic missiles, which would protect China from a nuclear attack from the United States. According to Vladimir Putin, only Russia and America possess such a system. In the expert community, this event has already been dubbed “unprecedented.” Why did Russia decide to help China build a missile attack warning system?

President Vladimir Putin at a meeting on Thursday ended the discussion club “Valdai” said that Moscow is helping China in the creation of warning of missile attack, which will greatly increase the defenses of the eastern partner of Russia.

“I probably won’t open the big secret. It’ll become clear anyway. We are now helping our Chinese partners to create an SPRN system – a missile attack warning system. This is a very serious thing, which will fundamentally increase the defense capability of the People’s Republic of China. Because now only the USA and Russia have such a system, ”the Russian leader said.

At the same time, the President noted that this form of cooperation with China is not directed against other countries. “We are not friends and do not work together against anyone. We always work in a positive manner, in the interests of each other, ”the head of state emphasized.

In recent years, Russia and China have regularly conducted joint exercises, thereby complementing both military-technical cooperation and coordination of the geopolitical level on key international issues. But assistance to China in the creation of an MPS is truly unprecedented from a military-political and historical point of view.

Recall that the Russian SPRN was created in the early 70s in the Soviet Union and continues to function successfully to this day. It consists of ground and space echelons: the ground echelon of the system is represented by radar stations, and the space echelon includes satellites moving in a geostationary orbit.

Together, they are designed to record the facts of launching missiles, calculate their trajectory and determine the point of a nuclear strike. Moreover, it does not matter whether or not nuclear warheads are installed on enemy missiles. The very fact of a missile launch is perceived as the beginning of a nuclear conflict by default.

In addition, in connection with the US withdrawing from the Treaty on intermediate- and shorter-range missiles, Russia had to look for various options for answers to Washington’s actions, including updating its own SPRN, because the importance of the system has grown sharply – and is acquiring special importance.

In February, representatives of the Ministry of Defense already reported that “Russia actually managed to complete the modernization” of its SPRN. In addition, after the collapse of the USSR, there were “gaps” in the peripheral radar field of the system due to the fact that part of the SPRN funds appeared on the territory of now independent states. However, now a continuous radar field has been created along the borders of Russia, which guarantees the detection of ballistic missiles from all directions. Now a similar system will appear in China.

According to the editor-in-chief of the National Defense magazine Igor Korotchenko, Moscow’s assistance in creating an SPRN will not only increase China’s geopolitical status and military capabilities, but also demonstrate the strategic nature of the interaction between Moscow and Beijing.

“This is indeed a huge contribution of Russia to strategic stability, since China receives a powerful tool in order not to become a victim of the first disarming blow from the United States,” Korotchenko told VZGLYAD newspaper . The expert is sure that this is an “unprecedented event that shows the degree of honest coordination and interaction between Moscow and Beijing.”

The president of the Academy of Geopolitical Problems Konstantin Sivkov expressed a similar point of view to the newspaper VZGLYAD. In his opinion, in the event of the creation of a missile defense system, Washington will lose the opportunity to launch a sudden nuclear missile strike on China, which means that China will be able to respond in a timely manner with its nuclear missile strike. “This will help stabilize the situation in the world,” the expert added.

“At the same time, it is worth considering that the creation of such a system will not bring any benefit to Russia, rather, on the contrary. Now China depends on us in the issue of a missile defense system, and therefore it has friendly feelings for us. When China will have at its disposal all the technologies that Russia possesses, or will create similar ones, it will cease to need Russia as a defender. And this can negatively affect Russian-Chinese relations, ”Sivkov noted.

In turn, Korotchenko is of the opposite opinion. He believes that such a step on the part of Russia will help her in promoting her own technologies in the field of over-the-horizon radar stations. And besides, here we can talk about the commercial component. “But it is secondary in this situation, since it will contribute to the further rapprochement of Russia and China, building a common security policy,” the expert emphasized.

“Plus, this makes the world more predictable, insures it against World War III and keeps the United States from military plans for China,” Korotchenko added.

In turn, the former deputy commander of the Air Defense Forces of the Russian Federation, Alexander Luzan, also believes that Russia will only benefit from the appearance of China’s SPRN. He recalled that the ground level SPRN consists, as a rule, of two types of stations: these are Voronezh long-range radars and the Sunflower short-range radar.

Voronezh provides detection of intercontinental ballistic missiles at a range of about 4-6 thousand kilometers. And “Sunflowers”, working not with a reflected beam, but with some bending of the earth’s surface, it makes sense to put on the sea coast of China. Then they can observe ships over the horizon, and intermediate and shorter-range missiles. For China, this is of most interest, ”Luzan told the VZGLYAD newspaper.

“As for the space echelon of SPRN, we can help the Chinese here by placing infrared systems that provide early detection of launches of intercontinental ballistic missiles,” the expert added.

For Russia, such cooperation is important in that if a unified information space is created and data is exchanged with Chinese radars, “the security of our country from the east will be even better.”

“Vladivostok and Primorye are protected here, but there is nothing“ in depth ”. We once tried to deploy our facilities in Mongolia, but it didn’t work out very well. Therefore, if the Chinese close this “tongue,” it will be very important for Russia, ”the source said.

At the same time, the United States will not be able to interfere with Russian-Chinese plans by military means. “From a military point of view, the United States cannot oppose anything to this. But they, of course, will try to put pressure on political and economic instruments. Somewhere visas will not be issued, somewhere sanctions will be imposed. But this is not critical. Safety is more important, ”summed up Alexander Luzan.
