Russia’s main weapon against US aircraft carriers

UNITED STATES, WASHINGTON (OBSERVATORY) — The Russian Granit cruise missile anti-ship missiles (ASMs) have the greatest potential for fighting American carrier groups, writes Sohu, a Chinese portal.

According to the author of the article, it was precisely this weapon that Secretary of Defense Sergei Shoigu had in mind when speaking of countering US carriers in a recent interview.

The head of the military department noted that the Pentagon spends the budget on the creation of aircraft carrier groups, while Moscow focuses on funds that can be used to combat them.

Such an approach is cheaper and more efficient, said Shoigu.

According to Sohu, among all the supersonic missile defense systems created in Russia since the Cold War, “Granite” is the weapon with the longest flight range, capable of inflicting the most severe damage on aircraft carriers.

It is noted that the PRK is capable of reaching a target at a distance of more than 600 kilometers, while US carrier groups are able to protect a zone with a radius of only 550 kilometers.

“Granite” just meets all the requirements of Russian weapons aimed at forming a strike against aircraft carriers,” the material says.

The author of the publication also drew attention to the fact that the RCC warhead can be replaced by a nuclear one with a TNT equivalent of up to 500 kilotons, which makes it possible to hit large targets on the water.

In September, the Pacific Fleet conducted exercises, during which they launched the Granit rocket from the Omsk nuclear submarine cruiser. The PRK successfully hit the target at a distance of about 350 kilometers.

The cruiser Omsk is often called the “killer” or “nightmare” of aircraft carriers. According to military experts, this is due to the fact that 24 Granit cruise missiles are in its arsenal. Each of them is capable of sinking an enemy carrier group in one gulp.
