Salt may not be that bad for your health

UNITED STATES, WASHINGTON (OBSERVATORY) — Neither too much nor too little: as long as the limit of six grams per day is not exceeded, salt has virtually no negative effect on the cardiovascular system, says a new study by the European Society of Cardiology (ESC).

Salt intake in moderate amounts has only a small negative effect on the human cardiovascular system, experts from the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) concluded.

“The results of our work on salt are in perfect agreement with most of the large studies that have examined the link between salt intake and cardiovascular disease or death, and do not support the widely held view that even a little bit of Salt is bad for your health,” said Professor Salim Yusuf of the Institute for Population Health Research at McMaster University in Hamilton, Canada.

Reduce the risk of heart attack

Yet there are limits to salt intake that should not be exceeded.

“Only a really high intake of salt, that is to say more than six grams a day, has a harmful effect,” he explained.

He also noted that to reduce the risk of heart attack or stroke, it was important not to smoke, control blood pressure and cholesterol, and have regular physical activity.

Finally, a large role is played by a balanced diet comprising not only a lot of fruits and vegetables, but also a moderate amount of nuts, dairy products and unprocessed red meats.
