Seven crew members of the tanker Stena Impero arrive in Dubai after Iran releases them

UNITED STATES, WASHINGTON (OBSERVATORY) — Seven of the 23 crew members of the British-flagged tanker Stena Impero, seized by Iran in July, arrived in Dubai on Thursday after Tehran freed them, a Russian official said.

Iran’s Revolutionary Guards seized a Swedish tanker, Stena Impero, on July 19 in the Strait of Hormuz for alleged naval violations, two weeks after Britain seized an Iranian tanker off the coast of Gibraltar. The Iranian tanker was released in August.

An official at the Russian embassy in Tehran said the seven freed crew – a Russian, a Latvian and five Indians – had obtained visas in Tehran on Wednesday and then traveled to Dubai.

The remaining 16 crew members will remain on board “until the fate of the tanker itself is determined,” the official said.

The Swedish carrier Stena Palk said the crew were from India, Russia, Latvia and the Philippines.

The company independently confirmed on Thursday the release of seven crew members and their travel to a safe place.

“We continue to work tirelessly to release the rest of the crew aboard Stena Impero and will continue to provide all possible support to their families during this difficult time,” Stina Balck President and CEO Eric Hanel said in a statement.

“As we said before, from the information we have, there is no evidence at the moment that Stina Impero has violated any rules or navigation regulations.”
