UNITED STATES (OBSERVATORY NEWS) — Each smart speaker has a microphone that allows it to record sound in the room, and an Internet connection makes it possible to transfer recorded data outside the house.
The physical mute function of the microphone is now provided by most manufacturers of such gadgets. But the microphone can “moonlight” and the speaker of the device.
Alexander Tokarenko, a member of the Association of Heads of Information Security Services, recalled the threat of wiretapping through any sound-reproducing device on the air of Sputnik.
“Any“ smart ”thing will keep track of who uses it, if it is laid down by the program,” the expert explained.
Often users dismiss such warnings, believing that no one needs records of what is happening in their home.
Tokarenko said that this is not so: this kind of information is in demand by the advertising industry, as it allows you to more accurately target commercial ads.
In addition to advertisers, the expert is sure that special services and criminals are ready to pay for wiretapping.
Last year, without exception, manufacturers of smart speakers were forced to make excuses to users. It is known that devices of this kind are often activated by mistake, and not when the user says a special command.
As it turned out , the recordings made as a result of such random inclusions, as well as the recordings of intentionally given voice commands, were monitored by specialists hired by Google, Apple, Microsoft and Amazon.
This was done in order to improve the work of recognition algorithms, but users were not warned about the possibility of such a “wiretap”.
