Snowden warns officials not to use WhatsApp and Telegram

UNITED STATES, WASHINGTON (OBSERVATORY) — Former US National Security Agency (NSA) employee Edward Snowden called on officials not to use WhatsApp and Telegram instant messengers. He said this on Monday, September 16, in an interview with the French radio station France Inter.

“Any of these two applications is better than SMS or phones without encoding, but both systems carry a big risk,” Snowden said.

He recalled that the owner of WhatsApp is Facebook, which “layer by layer” erases different levels of protection.

Instead, Snowden suggested using Signal Messenger or the Wire app. According to an ex-NSA official, they are free and more secure.

“Using WhatsApp or Telegram is only worth it if you have no alternatives,” he added.

In April 2018, the Tagansky court of Moscow decided to block the Telegram messenger. Earlier, Roskomnadzor accused the company’s leadership of refusing to provide the FSB with the keys to decrypt the users ’correspondence, which is necessary to identify impending attacks.
