Spain: Catalan leaders get 13 years in jail for sedition

UNITED STATES, WASHINGTON (OBSERVATORY) — Nine of 12 Catalan separatist leaders who defied the Spanish government and held an independence referendum in 2017 have been jailed for up to 13 years for sedition.

The separatist leaders’ failed attempt to secede from Spain sparked the worst political crisis in decades.

The Spanish government will be hoping to turn the page on the crisis and resume dialogue with the wealthy northeastern region with this verdict.
