Spain: health workers in isolation due to coronavirus

US, WASHINGTON (NEWS OBSERVATORY) — About 100 health workers along with 120 others are in solitary confinement in northern Spain after at least 5 doctors and medical staff were infected with the new coronavirus in hospitals.

Health Minister of the Basque Autonomous Region Nekane Murga says authorities have stepped up procedures for hiring new doctors to make up for possible shortages of healthcare workers in the coming months.

One of the sources of infection in Spain is in the city of Vitoria and is being closely monitored by the authorities. The second is in a small town near Madrid, where the cases relate to religious group activities.

Authorities said today that 149 cases of virus infection were confirmed in Spain, 35 more than the day before.

The Spanish Emergency Health Coordination Center reported that most of the infected people were abroad, mainly in Italy. Spain has had no deaths linked to the coronavirus epidemic.
