UNITED STATES, WASHINGTON (OBSERVATORY) — The Syrian army said on Saturday its air defense foiled an attack by “terrorist groups” with three drones on a key military site in the northwest of the country.
In a statement carried by the official media, the army said, “Our air defense media responded on the evening of 6/9/2019 to attempting to attack armed terrorist groups on one of our military sites in the Ghab plain through three drones loaded with bombs. Any casualties among our armed forces.”
Idlib witnessed a lull in air strikes targeting the opposition-controlled area after the Russian Defense Ministry announced on August 30 that Syrian forces would unilaterally cease fire in the “de-escalation zone” agreed two years ago.
The Russian defense ministry also urged opposition factions to join the truce. The ministry and its long-time ally Damascus say they target al Qaeda-inspired militants and respond to attacks.
Western intelligence sources said Moscow’s deployment of more special forces before the ceasefire had succeeded in shrinking opposition-held territory after months of deadlock on the front lines, where opposition fighters had previously been fighting the army and preventing it from making any significant progress.
Opposition fighters say that despite heavy Russian and Syrian airstrikes since the ceasefire began, heavy shelling of villages and towns under opposition control continues to force thousands of civilians to flee for safety in areas closer to the Turkish border.
They also say Russian special forces and Iranian-backed fighters fighting alongside the Syrian army have violated the ceasefire and made several attempts to storm opposition-held areas over the past few days but have been exported to them.
