Syrian army is advancing toward Ma`rat al-Numan

UNITED STATES (OBSERVATORY NEWS) — Damascus reported that the Syrian army was able to purify several villages and towns in the Idlib area to avoid escalation and progressed towards the city of Maarat al-Numan amid “a collapse in the ranks of the terrorists.”

Today, Saturday, the official Syrian “SANA” agency stated that the government forces have regained control of the towns and villages of Krasayan, Maar Shammarin, Abu Jarif and Techana, after eliminating the “last hotbeds of terrorism” in the southeastern countryside of Idlib, where the army made “new progress towards the city of Maarat al-Numan And that is after the terrorists suffered losses of personnel and equipment.”

The agency stated that “the army forces carried out accurate operations accompanied by artillery and missile launches on the axis of the village of Abu Jarif, the two towns of Kursan and Maar Shammarin and the village of Taqqana of the Ma`rat al-Numan region,” which represents one of the largest strongholds for the elements of the “Headquarters for the Liberation of Al-Sham” organization, which consists primarily of Al-Nusra Front militants, and allied formations, in the southern Idlib countryside.

“SANA” stressed that the military operation on this axis ended “by regaining control of the two towns of Krasayan, Maar Shammarin and the villages of Abu Jarif and Taqana, amid a collapse in the ranks of the terrorists after killing a number of them and wounding others, while groups of them took refuge in the city of Maarat al-Numan.”

Most of the Syrian Idlib province, in addition to parts of the governorates of Homs, Lattakia and Aleppo, are part of the de-escalation zone that was established in the framework of the Astana negotiating process between Russia, Turkey and Iran.

The region is witnessing a new field escalation after the armed factions stationed in the region led by the “Headquarters for the Liberation of Al-Sham” organization, which is primarily composed of elements of the “Al-Nusra Front”, launched several large-scale attacks last December on government forces sites that, after repelling those attacks, launched operations. Counter, through which in the past days it has liberated hundreds of square kilometers.
