Syrian crisis must be solved politically, Mogherini

EUROPEAN UNION (OBSERVATORY) –┬áThe EU supports efforts to prevent chemical addiction, while the only possible solution to the Syrian crisis is political, not military, EU diplomat Federica Mogherini said Sunday after attending the Arab League summit in Saudi Arabia.

“This year’s summit was even more important than usual at such a delicate moment in the war in Syria. The European Union has always opposed the use of chemical weapons – we repeated this right after the attack last week in the vicinity of Damascus – and we support efforts to prevent new chemical attacks,” Mogherini said on her website.

“At the same time, we know that the only possible solution to the Syrian tragedy is a political, not a military solution based on the Geneva talks under the leadership of the UN,” she said.

The United States, Britain and France hit rocket attacks on Syrian government facilities on Saturday morning, which they believe are used to produce chemical weapons.

From 00.42 to 02.10 UTC they released over 100 missiles in Syria, most of which were shot down by Syrian air defense. The Russian forces were not involved, but they monitored all the launches.

Russian President Vladimir Putin described the attacks as an act of aggression against a sovereign state, despite the fact that neither Russian military experts nor local residents confirmed the fact of the chemical attack, which became the pretext for strikes.

The European Union said on Saturday that it was informed of the attacks by the United States, France and Britain on facilities in Syria, which, according to the EU, were implemented with the sole purpose of preventing Damascus from using chemical weapons.
