Tehran confirms that the new US sanctions will not have “any effect”

UNITED STATES (OBSERVATORY NEWS) — Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Abbas Mousavi announced Friday that the new US sanctions on Iran’s nuclear program will not have “any effect.”

On Thursday, Washington announced new sanctions against the Iranian Atomic Energy Organization and its chief, Ali Akbar Salehi, for “playing an important role in Iran’s failure to honor its main nuclear commitment by exceeding the uranium stockpile and its enrichment level.”

Mousavi said in a statement that “Salehi is a well-known scientific and political figure,” noting that these sanctions, which reflect the “despair” of the Americans, “will not have any impact on the progress of the peaceful nuclear program of the Islamic Republic in Iran.”

Salehi holds a Ph.D in nuclear engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and was Minister of Foreign Affairs of his country between 2010 and 2013 before assuming the presidency of the Iranian Atomic Energy Organization.

Since May 2019, Tehran has waived several obligations stipulated in the international agreement on its nuclear program signed in 2015, in response to Washington’s decision to withdraw from the agreement and reintroduce severe economic sanctions affecting Iran.
