Thailand: doctors created a combination of drugs to treat coronavirus

UNITED STATES (OBSERVATORY NEWS) — The combination of an anti-AIDS drug and an anti-flu medicine has been found to be effective in treating a 2019-nCoV coronavirus patient in Thailand, the South China Morning Post wrote, citing a statement from the Kingdom’s Ministry of Health.

The patient, a 71-year-old Chinese woman, was admitted to Rachaviti Hospital in Bangkok with severe symptoms of a new type of pneumonia.

For treatment, doctors used, in particular, the Oseltamivir flu medicine, which was used to treat the Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS), and the AIDS drug Lopinavir / Ritonavir. 48 hours after drug administration, a laboratory test for coronavirus yielded a negative result.

The Thai Ministry of Health is now awaiting additional study results to confirm the findings.

The total number of confirmed cases of coronavirus infection in the kingdom is 19, the total number of cured patients has already reached eight. Another 382 people with suspected coronavirus are under surveillance.

On December 31, Chinese authorities informed the World Health Organization about an outbreak of unknown pneumonia in Wuhan, located in the central part of the country.

Experts have identified the causative agent of the disease – this is 2019-nCoV coronavirus. 304 people became victims of the new coronavirus in China, about 14.4 thousand are infected.

About 100 more people in almost 20 countries fell ill outside of China. WHO recognized the outbreak as an emergency of international concern.
