State Department reported on US policy towards Turkey

UNITED STATES (OBSERVATORY) –┬áThe US goal is to involve Turkey in support of the Geneva process, fight against the terrorist group “Islamic State” (IS) and counteraction to expanding the influence of Iran and Russia in Syria, the Assistant Secretary of State said at a hearing in the Foreign Affairs Committee of the US House of Representatives Wess Mitchell.

“Our goal is for Turkey to be a more active ally in supporting the Geneva process, smashing the IS and the long-term stabilization (situation) in Syria, and also as a long-term obstacle to the expansion (influence) of Russia and Iran,” Mitchell said, noting that this approach registered in the previously published US National Security and Defense Strategies.

“As for Syria, we are conducting intensive high-level discussions between various departments concerning both Turkey’s legitimate fears for its security and aimed at avoiding accidental clashes between our forces,” he said.

According to the Assistant Secretary of State, US policy towards Turkey is “maintaining close cooperation with the clear message that the US will actively protect its interests.”
