Three minors injured in stabbing in The Hague

UNITED STATES (OBSERVATORY NEWS) — Dutch police are searching for a man suspected of carrying out an attack that stabbed three minors on Friday in a busy commercial street in The Hague.

The suspect fled after the attack at a supermarket in the center of the city, while panic shook the crowds of shoppers on the annual sale day known as “Black Friday”.

Hours earlier, a man wearing a fake explosive belt killed two people who stabbed the knife on Friday at the London Bridge before being killed by police, in an attack which British police described as a “terrorist”.

“We take all the scenarios into account,” a police spokeswoman said, according to ANP.

Police, who were still searching for the bomber, said earlier they were looking for a “slightly brown man” aged between 40 and 50, wearing a black coat, gray sports trousers and a shawl. But it later announced that “in-depth investigations” were still underway.

The three wounded, all from al-Qassar, were able to leave the hospital and return to their homes, police said, without specifying their age.

The attack took place in a supermarket on the bustling Grote Marktstrasse in the city’s biggest shopping district.

Two girls rushed to the building after being stabbed, EOS television quoted witnesses as saying.

– It’s like a leopard.

“I saw two girls yelling and running away. A man fled. He jumped very athletically over the seats to escape. It was like a cheetah,” one witness told television.

Social media footage showed panicked shoppers fleeing away from the scene of the attack.

“A knife attack and a number of wounded were on the Grote Marktstraat street in The Hague. Emergency services are on site,” police said in a tweet.

A crowd gathered Friday evening behind the police cordon, according to an AFP correspondent, as several ambulances and helicopters flew overhead.

Dutch authorities gave no further information about the attack, which took place close to the parliament, where the government is based, and several international organizations.

The Netherlands has experienced a number of attacks or attempted terrorist attacks in recent years.

In March, four people were killed when a man of Turkish origin opened fire inside a tramway in Utrecht, who is on trial for murder for terrorist purposes.

On Monday, Dutch police announced the arrest of two men suspected of planning a terrorist attack in the Netherlands at the end of the year with explosive belts and a car bomb.

A Dutch court recently sentenced a Pakistani to 10 years in jail for preparing a “terrorist attack” against a far-right anti-Islamic lawmaker, Geert Wilders.

In September 2018, the Dutch Public Prosecutor’s Office announced the foiling of a “major terrorist attack” in the Netherlands by arresting seven men suspected of intending to act during a “major event”.
