Trump announced an increase in duties on goods from China

UNITED STATES, WASHINGTON (OBSERVATORY) — U.S. President Donald Trump said he will increase duties on Chinese imports in response to China imposing duties on US goods.

Trump said on Twitter on Friday that the United States will increase $ 250 billion in duties on Chinese imports from October 1 to 30% from the current 25%.

In addition, Trump announced an increase in planned duties on the remainder of Chinese goods in the amount of $ 300 billion from 10% to 15%. The United States will begin to apply these duties on certain goods from September 1, but about half of these goods were deferred until December 15.

The Committee on Tariffs and Fees under the State Council of China on August 23 announced a two-stage application of new duties on American goods in the range from 5% to 25%. The first part of import duties will come into force on September 1, the second part – on December 15.

Duties of 5% and 10% will be applied to more than 5 thousand American-made goods, the import volume of which from China is $ 75 billion per year. From December 15, China will also impose duties of 25% on imports of cars from the United States and 5% on imports of spare parts and components.

The US president called this move of China politically motivated. Trump wrote on Twitter that “great American companies are ordered to immediately start looking for alternatives to China, including the return of companies and the production of goods in the US.”
