UNITED STATES, WASHINGTON (OBSERVATORY) — On Thursday, President Trump approved the creation of the US space command, citing the need for a centralized unit to protect American interests in the “future theater of operations,” as he put it. The freshly baked command, he called the forerunner of future cosmic forces.
The sixth kind of troops Trump has long promised to supporters at rallies and in every possible way sought his creation in Congress.
“Space forces will equip, train, and arm warriors for space mission missions,” said Trump at a ceremony in the Rose Garden. According to him, this will confirm American dominance in space: “We know that the best way to prevent conflict is to prepare for victory.”
The idea of creating a unified command to coordinate the role of the military in space is not new. The prototype of this structure was created by President Ronald Reagan, but subsequently the department was dissolved after the September 11, 2001 attacks, when the Pentagon switched to the fight against terrorism.
However, 17 years later, there was practically no doubt in the Pentagon: American interests must be protected from global competitors such as Russia and China. Particular vigilance should be shown if Moscow and Beijing take over American vehicles in space – especially satellites that act as space navigators of aircraft carriers in the Arabian Sea or fighter planes over the Persian Gulf, and also collect intelligence about the enemy.
“Part of Earth’s conflicts will unfold in space, as space technology plays a crucial role, and space objects are increasingly becoming military targets,” said Brian Weeden, a former Air Force nuclear and space officer. Mr. Wieden is now Director of the Safe World Foundation Planning Program.
Although the existence of threats is beyond doubt, the question of how to counter them raises a lot of gossip.
