UNITED STATES, WASHINGTON (OBSERVATORY) — US President Donald Trump on Thursday announced the creation of a special military space command at the Pentagon that will be tasked with ensuring the threat of US dominance from China and Russia in this new battlefield.
“This is a historic moment, a historic day that recognizes the importance of central space for US security and defense,” Bush said at a ceremony in Washington. “The leadership of Spicecom will ensure that American hegemony in space will never be threatened.”
Trump’s goal is to fight US enemies, who are attacking “American satellites that are very important for operations on the battlefield.”
The new command will oversee space, satellites and high-flying aircraft. Gen. John Raymond, commander of the new military command, said US adversaries are already focusing on ways to use space in a wider conflict.
“Today, we are the best in the world in space, but our level of excellence is narrowing. We want to move quickly and stay ahead.”
The US president canceled his planned trip to Poland on Thursday due to Hurricane Durian, which is approaching the Florida coast.
Trump, who was due to arrive Sunday in Warsaw to mark the 80th anniversary of the start of World War II, which began on September 1, 1939 with an attack from Nazi Germany on Poland, said he would focus instead on hurricane preparations.
