UNITED STATES (OBSERVATORY) – US President Donald Trump announced Friday that he may visit Jerusalem on the occasion of the opening of the US embassy he has decided to transfer from Tel Aviv.
“The embassy in Jerusalem was a promise made by many presidents, all of them made electoral promises and never found the courage to implement them,” Trump said during a joint press conference with German Chancellor Angela Merkel in Washington, adding: “I have done so.
“The embassy is preparing to open its doors and the building will be beautiful,” he said.
The controversial move is due to take place on May 14, coinciding with Israel’s 70th anniversary.
Trump announced in December his decision to “officially recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel”, ignoring warnings from all sides.
