UNITED STATES (OBSERVATORY NEWS) — US President Donald Trump said that the US military has been in Syria for 10 years to combat the Islamic State terrorist group.
“It was assumed that they would be there for 30 days. And they had already been there for 10 years – in Syria. Ten years. It was assumed that they would enter (into the country), strike a quick blow at IS and exit,” Trump said on Monday to reporters before a cabinet meeting.
Trump did not specify why he counts off such a period of struggle against a terrorist group that began active activity only in 2014.
In addition, Trump made another controversial statement on the withdrawal of US troops from Syria.
Earlier it was reported that out of about a thousand US troops in Syria, about 150-200 people will remain in the country, who will control the At-Tanf garrison in the south.
The rest will be withdrawn, but not to the United States, but to neighboring Iraq.
Now, Trump has mentioned that in addition to this garrison, part of the military will be deployed in Syria near the border with Israel, and another in some other place for “protecting the oil,” that is, the oil-bearing region.
Since 2014, the United States and its allies conducted an operation against IS in Syria and Iraq, and in Syria they acted without the agreement of the country’s official authorities.
