UNITED STATES (OBSERVATORY) – US President Donald Trump on Saturday threatened to stop federal government activity in September if Congress did not provide more funding to build a wall along the border with Mexico.
“This wall started and we have $ 1.6 billion,” Trump said at an election rally in Washington, Michigan.
“We will come again on September 28 and if we do not have security on the border, we will have no choice. We will close the country because we need to secure the border.”
Trump had declared a similar threat in March to press for amendments to the Immigration Act that would prevent criminals from entering the country.
Last month, Trump signed a $ 1.3 trillion spending budget that would continue to fund the government until the end of September. Trump’s Republicans, who are keen to control Congress, are unlikely to support any halt to government activity before November’s midterm elections.
Trump referred to hundreds of Central American migrants in “convoys” as one of the reasons for enhancing border security.
