UNITED STATES (OBSERVATORY NEWS) — The White House announced that US President Donald Trump will meet on Wednesday the leader of the Venezuelan opposition to discuss ways to accelerate the democratic transition in Venezuela.
Guaido, recognized by the United States and about 50 countries as transitional president of Venezuela, is seeking to rally international support for his efforts to topple Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro.
The meeting scheduled for 14.15 (1915 GMT) will come the day after the US President announced in his speech about the state of the union that Guaido attended, that “Maduro’s tyranny will be eliminated.”
A statement by the American Presidency affirmed that “continuing to work with our partners in the region to confront the illegal dictatorship in Venezuela, and to stand with the Venezuelan people to ensure a democratic and prosperous future.”
Maduro remained steadfast so far in the face of Guaido’s efforts to topple him, after the opposition’s mobilization decreased from what it was at the beginning of the protests that were broken out at the beginning of last year, massive demonstrations against the government amid a severe economic crisis that pushed millions of Venezuelans to emigrate.
Guaido, the speaker of the National Assembly, had appointed himself in January 2019 as a transitional president after the Legislative Council considered Maduro “usurpers” of power and the elections in which he won a second “fraudulent” presidential term.
