UNITED STATES, WASHINGTON (OBSERVATORY) — Doctors from major cities in Turkey have been sent to two southern provinces in preparation for a possible incursion into northern Syria, security sources told Reuters on Friday, adding that doctors’ licenses in the region had also been canceled.
Turkey and the United States are working to establish a safe area in northern Syria on the border with Turkey. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Washington was delaying implementation and that Turkey would carry out an operation inside Syria if the safe area was not established by the end of September.
A security source said doctors from major cities had been sent to the provinces of ليanlıurfa and Mardin in preparation for a possible incursion.
“President Erdogan spoke clearly of Turkey’s concern about the presence of the PYD and the Syrian Kurdish YPG in Syria and pointed to a possible military operation if no progress is made in the second half of September,” the source said.
Erdogan is expected to discuss plans for the safe zone, along Syria’s 450-kilometer border from the east of the Euphrates to the Iraqi border, with US President Donald Trump this week.
Turkey has already carried out two incursions targeting the YPG in Syria.
“Doctors’ leave has been suspended to prepare for a possible cross-border operation,” a senior security official said. We prepare long ago. Now we have reached a stage where the operation can be carried out at any time that seems necessary.”
