Turkish FM calls operation in northeast Syria a temporary measure

UNITED STATES, WASHINGTON (OBSERVATORY) — Turkey’s actions in northeast Syria are a temporary measure, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said during a telephone conversation with Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif.

“During a telephone conversation, Mr. Mevlut Cavusoglu stressed that Turkey respects the territorial integrity of Syria, saying that Turkey’s step in this region (in the northeast – ed.) Is temporary,” the Iranian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

In turn, the head of the Iranian foreign ministry stressed that Tehran is opposed to military operations and considers it necessary to respect the territorial integrity of Syria and establish a stable and secure situation there.

Earlier, Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan said that a decision on a Turkish operation in northern Syria east of the Euphrates could be made in the coming days. According to him, the purpose of the operation will be to clear the Syrian border with Turkey from the self-defense forces of the Syrian Kurds, create a security zone there, and place the Syrian refugees in Turkey. Washington said US forces would not participate in Turkey’s military operation in northern Syria.

The presence of Turkish forces on the border of Syria, which are conducting an operation there against Kurdish forces, Damascus has repeatedly called illegal and urged Ankara to withdraw troops.
