UNITED STATES, WASHINGTON (OBSERVATORY) — The UN envoy to Syria, Geir Pedersen, said on Thursday that the constitutional committee on Syria could be formed in late September.
This came in a press statement made by Pederson, after briefing the UN Security Council on the developments in Syria.
The UN envoy stressed that “the formation of a committee to draft the constitution, and negotiations on the names that will comprise the committee is nearing its end.”
He explained that the Constitutional Committee can be announced before the start of the General Assembly talks on September 24 next.
It is worth mentioning that the decision to form a committee to draft a new constitution for Syria was made at the Syrian National Dialogue Conference held in the Russian city of Sochi on January 30, 2018.
The committee is to consist of 150 people, 50 selected by the regime, 50 by the opposition, and 50 by representatives of Syrian civil society organizations.
The regime of Bashar al-Assad, however, had objected to some of the opposition figures on the last list.
