UN sends experts to Saudi Arabia to investigate Aramco attacks (diplomats)

UNITED STATES, WASHINGTON (OBSERVATORY) — UN experts are expected to arrive in Saudi Arabia for an international investigation into the attacks on two Aramco oil facilities on Saturday, diplomatic sources told AFP.

“An international investigation is very good,” one source said, declining to be identified. A diplomat said the experts were on their way to Saudi Arabia or might have arrived.

Diplomats said the mission of the experts was based in particular on the resolution that endorsed the 2015 nuclear deal and the resolution that imposed an arms embargo on Yemen.

The first resolution, adopted in 2015, provides that experts from the UN Political Department can be sent when materials related to weapons manufactured in Iran are found in a country.

The resolution on Yemen, which was also adopted in 2015, was accompanied by the formation of an expert committee charged with implementing the arms embargo. The Committee reports periodically. A diplomatic source said the commission’s experts had been summoned because Houthi rebels had adopted Saturday’s attacks.

The Saudi Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Monday that it would “invite international experts and the United Nations to find out the facts and participate in investigations” regarding the attacks on the facilities Aramco.
