UN welcomes North Korea’s decision to suspend nuclear tests

UNITED NATIONS (OBSERVATORY) – The United Nations welcomes the decision of the DPRK to suspend nuclear tests, this will help advance the dialogue between the Koreas, said UN Izumi Nakamitsu, speaking at the opening of the preparatory conference of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons 2020 in Geneva.

“The decision of the DPRK to stop nuclear tests and launches of intercontinental missiles, as well as dismantle the site for nuclear weapons tests, is the development that is welcomed and which, we hope, will contribute to establishing confidence and maintaining an atmosphere of sincere dialogue and negotiations,” she said.

According to her, the UN Secretary General “counts on the positive outcome of the upcoming inter-Korean summit and looks forward to an early agreement on a resumption of negotiations that will lead to a confirmed denuclearization and a sustainable peace on the Korean Peninsula.”
